10 lies you were sold about success

Follow your passion. Hustle harder. Find your why. Most success advice is recycled nonsense. Here's what actually works.

Most success advice was written for likes, not for you. It sounds good on a stage and falls apart on a Tuesday. These are the ten lies I had to unlearn - and what to do instead.

The 10 lies

  1. 01
    'Follow your passion'

Passion follows competence, not the other way around. Pick something useful, get genuinely good at it, and the passion shows up around year two.

  2. 02
    'Hustle harder'

Most people don't have an effort problem. They have a focus problem. Pointed work beats more work every time.

  3. 03
    'Find your why'

You don't find a why on a Sunday journaling. You build one by doing hard things for long enough to care about the result.

  4. 04
'Quit your job and go all in'

Romantic, often reckless. Build the offer to £2-5k/month on the side first. Then quit with leverage, not from emotion.

  5. 05
    'Go viral and you're set'

Virality is a spike. A business is a slope. Pick the slope every time.

  6. 06
'You need to be more confident'

You need more reps. Confidence is a side-effect of evidence, not a personality trait you can manifest.

  7. 07
'Network your way to the top'

Nobody important wants to network with someone who hasn't built anything. Build first; the rooms open themselves.

  8. 08
    'Manifest it'

Clarity matters. Vision boards don't. Write the outcome, then write the 5 actions for this week. The universe responds to calendars.

  9. 09
    'Successful people don't sleep much'

They mostly do - they just don't post about it. Sleep is a performance enhancer disguised as laziness.

  10. 10
    'It'll happen when you're ready'

It happens when you're committed. Ready is a story you tell yourself to delay the start.

How to implement

  • Pick one piece of 'wisdom' you've been quoting. Cross it out.
  • Replace it with one sentence based on evidence from your own life.
  • Build the next 90 days around that sentence.

What I learned

The advice that actually moved me forward was boring, specific, and unsexy: ship weekly, sleep eight hours, charge more, talk to customers, save 30%. Nothing went viral. Everything compounded.

Be suspicious of advice that fits on a t-shirt.
