How to get your first 10 paying clients
A complete system to go from zero to ten paying clients: build a brand, nurture trust, and sell with confidence.
Most people don't have a product problem. They have a trust problem. Your first ten clients don't come from a better offer. They come from a system that moves strangers from 'who is this?' to 'I want in.' Here's the exact flow.
The 6-step system
- 01Build your personal brand
Pick 1-2 channels where your people already spend time. Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn - choose based on where your ideal client hangs out, not where you feel comfortable. Post consistently about one problem you solve. One channel, one message, one year. That's the foundation.
- 02Move them to your newsletter
Social media is rented land. You need a list you own. Build a lead magnet that solves a small, specific problem - a checklist, a short guide, a template. Offer it in exchange for an email. Your lead magnet should feel like a free sample of the bigger transformation you sell.
- 03Nurture them with value
Send a newsletter at a consistent cadence - weekly, twice a week, or even daily if you have enough to say. Educate them. Share stories. Show your thinking. Minimum one week of nurturing for a small offer. For bigger investments - courses, coaching, premium services - nurture for at least three months. Trust compounds slowly; don't rush it.
- 04Add CTAs to every email
Even while nurturing, include a soft call to action in every newsletter. 'Reply and let me know your biggest challenge.' 'Book a free exploratory call.' 'Join the waitlist.' You are training your readers to take action long before you ask them to buy.
- 05Release an early bird offer
When you're ready to sell, open with a limited early bird price. Short window - maybe 72 hours or one week. This creates urgency without being manipulative. The people who have been nurtured longest will move first. Reward them with a better price.
- 06Open the full price
After the early bird closes, release the full price offer. The window is now open indefinitely (or for a longer period). Some people need more time. Some missed the early bird. Give them a clear next step at the regular price.
If you run a services business
This flow changes if you sell services, not products. You don't always need a newsletter. The best path is often: post on social, attract interest, and get them on a call directly. On that call, ask good questions, diagnose their problem, and see if you're a good fit. Then sign the client. Simple, direct, and effective for agencies, consultants, and freelancers.
How to implement this month
- Week 1: Pick your channel and post 4 times. Don't overthink the content.
- Week 2: Create one lead magnet. A 1-page checklist is enough.
- Week 3: Set up your email tool and write your welcome sequence (3 emails).
- Week 4: Add a CTA to every email you send and start talking about your offer.
What most people get wrong
They skip the nurturing. They build a lead magnet, collect emails, and immediately pitch. That's not a system - that's a sprint. The people who buy in month three are often the ones who joined in week one. Respect the timeline. Educate first. Sell second.
Your first 10 clients don't come from better copy. They come from showing up long enough that trust becomes the only logical next step.
